Background

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 comprehensive and interlinked goals that provides a blueprint for addressing health, social, environmental and economic development challenges faced by the world, by 2030. Post the adoption of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, Government of India has undertaken various concerted and institutional measures to achieve the SDGs by 2030.

The effectiveness of the interventions to achieve SDGs will depend on how the framework’s relevance can be translated to guide the development priorities. Using SDGs as a framing device to guide the development policy will be a crucial input to achieve SDGs through bottom-up action.

The disproportionate levels of urban migration, combined with rapid urbanisation and unbridled development, have gradually changed the role and responsibilities of cities in India. The interlinkages and interdependencies of various urban activities extends the ambit of influence of cities well beyond the scope of targets as articulated in SDG 11. Hence, the performance of cities acts as a crucial indicator in assessing the overall progress of SDGs in India.

Against this, the objective of the project is to guide and compartmentalize the urban agenda of Coimbatore with

• A comprehensive and localised indicator framework reflecting the city’s development priorities
• An interactive Coimbatore data portal dashboard for collating, analysing and visualizing the urban progress report of the city.
